Small Valentine Quilled Heart Cards

Happy February!

These are so easy to make. I used an Avery 8463 label template to add the Courier text and get 10 on a page. They are only 2"x2" (5 cm) folded. The quilled hearts are two 8" x 1/8" strips, teardrops shape glued together. I found a great bargain of twine at Hobby Lobby.

They would be great for teachers, co-workers, neighbors, or my favorite - a wine bottle tag! A small bag topper, tucked in a gift or on a desk.

Have a fabulous weekend!

Simple Back to School Quilled Card

I cannot believe school starts here in two weeks. August is flying by. I should be working on my store items (I have decided to open next month) and instead, worked on this quilled card today. I used 1/8-inch strips, all 16" long. The tip of the pencil is a cone I flattened. The brown paper for the lead is 3". I crimped a silver strip for the bottom of the eraser.

This is the same pencil design of my Apples & Pencils Provo Craft stickers that are now retired.

Have a fantastic week!

Quilled Hearts ~ Valentine's Day Cards

These are easy and fun to create. Quilled hearts (two teardrop shapes glued side-by-side) and a little bit of twine. I like to use eccentric loose rolls before shaping the larger hearts.

The teardrops are 4, 6 and 8 inch strips.

 8 and 24 inch teardrops

4 inch teardrops

I used free fonts from DaFont website.

Have a great day!

Happy Mother's Day Weekend

I only had one grandmother growing up and she was amazing. She was a story-teller and wrote a book for her grandchildren when she was 74 years old-- because she knew how much we loved to hear her stories. I read it every year at this time. During one visit with her, she told me that "every day should be Mother's Day" and I never forgot it. We sat for hours that day and she told me the most awesome stories about my Mother growing up. From that day forward, I always quoted my grandmother in cards that I gave to my Mother.

Two years ago on Mother's Day, I knew it would be my Mother's last. We sat and read my grandmother's book together. We laughed as my Mother, in turn, told me her version of the many stories that are told in the book :)

I made this card to put on my Mother's table this year.

I used paper from the new DCWV Spring Fling/Summer Combo Stack and Old Paper Distressed Ink. The cherry is quilled and adds a bit of dimension to the card.

Have a great Mother's Day weekend!

Miniature Quilled Flowers on Card

The background paper is my inspiration for this group of miniature flowers. I used a thin quilt needle tool and narrow English paper strips. These strips are more narrow than the American 1/16" wide paper.

This is similar to the Mother's Day card I made last year, using a different background. More how-to details are here.

Cards for Baby ~ quilled elements

I recently came across these baby cards that I made nine years ago in 2002 and decided to share. Remember the speckled paper with matching envelopes that was thick but soft? And I used to put a ribbon in every card I made :) For these I used small paper punches, a few pearls, thin satin ribbon and quilled elements. The balloon string is wire.

The following is a variety of baby buggies for cardmaking or scrapbooking. These were made about five years ago. I weaved 1/8" paper strips and added a glue backing. When dry, I cut out a circle and a piece of the circle .. trimming to the center and then at an angle. Crimping the strips makes it easy to use as multi color trims and adds dimension.

Easy Quilling on Simple Cards

These are easy, simple and fun to make in one short sitting. You can print or stamp your imagine/text and with minimal quilled embellishing, these cards can be made quickly :)

NOTE CARD

I printed a 50's jukebox and dance graphic and added quilled records. I glued a 36" (91.4 cm) black strip to a 10" (25.4 cm) neon piece and made a tight roll. Quilled musical notes would also be cute.

TWO-TONED CARDSTOCK

I lined the inside of the card with lime green cardstock. I used a 3/4" (1.9 cm) punch to make the round window at the top corner and a 1-3/4" (4.4 cm) punch for the raised "Thanks" piece. The quilled flower is made using narrow paper strips so this card would be good for mailing. If you have them, using round scalloped punches would dress up the card a bit!

OPEN HEARTS

I do nothing in moderation, so this card could probably use less hearts than I applied :) I printed a simple light purple swirl and added pink and purple open hearts I made using 1.5" (3.8 cm) and 3/4" (1.9 cm) long strips. I trimmed 1/32" (.8 mm) strips to make the spirals. I think they are easier to make using narrow strips.

I hope I have given you some new ideas to make a quick card. Enjoy!

Quilling Fill-in Technique

This is such a simple, quick technique that can be applied to any printed motif. On the left is my trio of dresses project from my book. I was commissioned by an international craft magazine to teach various quilling techniques and this is one of them. The issue was published in 2007 and the pictures I have left from the projects aren't the best, but they give you an idea of how to get started.

All the printed motifs I used are free clip art that I altered slightly. I started with a simple handbag. I drew a diagonal line and filled in one side with black then printed on a white card. The blank area is filled in with 1/16" (0.158 cm) wide "S" scrolls and loose coils/tendrils. The lengths varied and ranged from 1/4" to 3/4" (0.635 to 1.9 cm).

Using tweezers, I first tap the bottom edge of the shape on a thin layer of glue on wax paper and immediately apply to the card. The editor wanted quilling to be the main focus so I did very little embellishing. I inserted two eyelets and added a string of pearls for the handle. I let the handle dangle loose on one of the cards, but the purse was printed too low so they didn't use that one.

I also filled in a dress and shoe. I added pink to the heel and removed the printed bow on the shoe. I added a black satin ribbon bow on the finished card for dimension.

If you try this technique or have used it before, please let me know and I'll post your project!  Enjoy!
